[DIY] The Beauty of Natural Honey

Egypt, the ‘land of milk and honey,’ was home to one of the most beautiful women in ancient history – Cleopatra. The ruler and companion of Julius Ceasar took advantage of her natural resources; implementing milk and honey into her daily skin routine. Using just a few ingredients found in your pantry, you can bottle the beauty of Cleopatra at home.

In it’s natural state, honey works wonders in the treatment of acne, as well as combating the signs of aging. With it’s ability to retain and absorb moisture into the skin, honey leaves your skin smooth, radiant and glowing. While absorbing the moisture, honey works overtime by also absorbing the impurities in your pores, clearing them out and shrinking them at the same time. The natural anti-oxidants and anti-microbial properties in honey work together to shield your skin from the environment – which is especially important during these hot summer months.

Honey Yogurt Face Scrub

2 tsp almonds or oatmeal, pulsed to a fine meal
2 tsp organic, plain yogurt
1 tsp honey

Combine all of the above ingredients and mix together well. Using liberal amounts, massage the mix gently into your skin in a circular motion. If you are prone to oil, concentrate on those areas before moving on to the rest of your face. Be careful not to over-scrub, as this might cause irritation to sensitive areas on your face. Leave on your face for 10-15 minutes before washing off.

TIP: For dry skin, use full-fat yogurt; for oil-prone skin opt for skim.

Honey Olive Deep Conditioner

1/2 cup honey
3 tbsp olive oil

Combine both ingredients and mix well, making sure that none of the oil remains separated from the honey. Massage into your hair [dry or wet and unwashed] and cover with a shower cap. Let sit for 30-40 minutes before shampooing and conditioning as usual.

[Review] Murad Clean Scene

Just when you thought that the Murad line couldn’t be more complete, they come back even stronger. This season they have introduced their first line of skin care, specifically targeting teens. Murad Clean Scene is a thorough collection of skincare, keeping your teenager’s skin clean and clear from start to finish. Designed to keep the skin balanced and hydrated, Clean Scene’s five powerhouse products fend off free radicals using Yumberry – the Superfruit of 2011.

Review

The Clean Scene Collection looks like it was born right out of a teenage girl’s room. With it’s vibrant packaging and flirty designs, the Collection is spot on with Murad’s target demographic. In fact, every time I pick up a bottle and pop it open, I just want to start singing Katy Perry [okay...maybe that's taking it too far, but you get the idea.]

Included in the Murad Clean Scene Collection is: The Begging For Balance Moisturizer, Gaga For Glow Facial Scrub, Crazy for Clear Spot Treatment, Craving for Clean Cleanser and the Down for Defense SPF 15 Moisturizer. Each one of these products smells amazing – like a cross between fresh strawberries, a raspberry smoothie and pomegranate. Previously I’ve only eaten Yumberry on my yogurt, so this opened up a whole new world for me.

Begging For Balance Moisturizer – Free of parabens, sulfates, petrochemicals, phthalates, GMO’s, triclosan [basically everything that you DON'T want on your skin], the moisturizer is perfect for the vulnerable adolescent skin. Murad suggests that you use Begging for Balance once to twice daily, but I found that using it twice left me a bit greasy. I have extremely oily skin, so for those of you with normal or dry, twice is probably perfectly fine. While I did end up greasy, I did notice a difference after 4 days of using it. My skin felt more supple and seemed to have more elasticity.

Sex, Chocolate…or Cosmetics?

Recently, a study was conducted in the United States surrounding the common weaknesses of a woman – sex, chocolate and beauty products. With over 1300 women surveyed, you may be surprised at the results.

Women were more willing to give up their coveted luxuries for more than a week; such as sex, dessert and coffee, than to part with their favorite beauty product.
Women were also more likely to give up their favorite designer shoes and jeans than to let airline security confiscate their favorite cosmetics and skincare products.

“Women not only want beauty products that make them feel radiant inside and out, but products that are customized for their skin and lifestyle. It’s no surprise they would rather go without a few of life’s other simple pleasures. Once you find a product you love, that’s affordable and works, you never want to let it go,” said John Krites, L’Bel USA’s beauty expert.
