Parabens: What’s All the Hype About?

paraben Parabens: Whats All the Hype About?

As we all know, there are a lot of unsafe ingredients in our products today. Not only do we want to look beautiful or handsome, but we also want to be healthy. There is still a large debate over Parabens, a ommonly used preservative in the U.S. today.

What exactly are Parabens?

Parabens are a class of chemicals widely used as preservatives in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. Parabens are effective preservatives in many types of formulas. These compounds, and their salts, are used primarily for their bactericidal and fungicidal properties. They can be found in shampoos, commercial moisturizers, shaving gels, personal lubricants, topical/parenteral pharmaceuticals, spray tanning solution, makeup[1], and toothpaste. They are also used as food additives.

It was first found by a British researcher that parabens may lead to cancer, which immediately had the European  region take action.  Parabens have also been known to cause tumors, infertility and DNA damage. The CIR Cosmetic Ingredient Review stated that parabens are safe to use up to a level of 25%. A lot of companies in the U.S. are becoming more aware and removing parabens from their products, but research is still being done. It’s always great to be aware of your ingredients whether it be in your food or your beauty products because they are the two main things that are used everyday and can highly effect your health. Beauty Collection carries a wide variety of paraben-free products, here are a few brands that I would recommend.

Beauty Collection carries other paraben-free products and brands, which you can easily find by searching “paraben free” in our online store.

Paraben Free Beauty Products

At Beauty Collection, we work hard to provide you with natural “greener” and paraben-free alternatives to your beauty product needs. In September, we launched a breakthrough line of cosmetics from Stript that is completely paraben-free. Here’s a quote from the founder of the company about this new exciting line of cosmetics.

“Make-up is my passion. As a cosmetic artist, trainer, saleswoman and brand manager with over 15 years in the industry, I’ve observed an ever-increasing trend in consumer awareness. Everyone wants to know what’s in their products, and the function that each ingredient serves.

I’ve searched tirelessly for an alternative brand of beauty care to satisfy that growing consumer awareness. A brand which unites purity, social responsibility and product safety… A cosmetic which has been literally “stripped” of parabens, artificial oils, dyes and fragrances. That’s why I’m so pleased to introduce you to the culmination of my vision: Stript Natural Mineral Make-up.

Stript offers the latest in paraben-free preservatives called Natural Broad Spectrum Microbial Growth Inhibitors. We’ve also identified and used natural alternatives to other artificial additives. For example, marine botanicals rich in antioxidant vitamins; gossypium herbacium (cotton) fibers coated with specially milled mica to diffuse light and diminish the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and pores; and the mineral boron nitride, known for it’s soft focus optical effect…

Enjoy my products and love what you’re not wearing.”

Parabens and Your Skin

What are parabens?
Parabens are a large collection of synthetic chemical products found in most skin care and cosmetic products including moisturizers, shampoos, foundation, face powder, exfoliants, baby products… There are thousands of skin care products that contain parabens, the list is endless. The reason parabens are put into skin care products is they have an antibacterial effect and act as a preservative.

So what? There are two problems.
One: The first is the potential for parabens to be absorbed by the skin into the bloodstream from where they can lodge in our fatty tissues. Parabens mimic the hormone estrogen and can be absorbed by the breast tissue. In their unconverted form, they’ve been found in breast tumors.

Two: Anti aging products are bought by both men and women in the hope of preserving the appearance of their skin. The problem is that some parabens can react to the UV rays in sunlight to produce a substance that actually accelerates aging. And not just a little ironically, many sunblocks actually contain parabens!

How can I tell if there are parabens in the products I use?
Check the label of any cosmetic product you’re using. Some of the more recognizable ones are: Ethylparaben, Methylparaben, Isobutylparaben, Aseptoform Butyl and Benzoic acid.

Over 90% of skin care products, contain these chemicals because they’re cheap and until recently, considered relatively safe. The FDA has requested cosmetic companies to test the various ingredients they use to manufacture their products (May 2005). While they are to be commended for this, the process is laboriously slow and ongoing.

How can I protect my family against parabens?
Make sure you use all-natural mineral cosmetic products like those created by Stript Cosmetics (see our paraben-free products post) and 100% Pure. Beauty Collection is proud to once again be ahead of the curve.
