After styling your hair, the next step is blowing it dry.  If you have curly hair, you already know that a diffuser is a MUST HAVE.  If you apply uncontrolled heat to your ringlets…you will end up with a big ball of frizz.  The cool thing about Diffusers is that they’re designed just for you – your hair actually sits in them and then blows air through your curls or waves to give them their natural shape.

Mark, one of our top stylists at THE STUDIO at Beauty Collection West Hollywood fills us in on his trade secrets to creating  healthy, shiny and smooth ringlets. He knows better than anyone else how to turn your mane of frizz and fluff into a work of art.

STEP 1:  Use moisturizing shampoo formulated for curly hair.

Apply a quarter-sized amount of moisturizing shampoo to your hair. Focus on massaging in the shampoo with your fingertip in circular motions all along your scalp. Leave the shampoo in for a few minutes and rinse out completely.

Then, apply a quarter-sized amount of a hydrating conditioner to your hair, focusing on the body and ends. Conditioner “feeds” your hair and nourishes the dry parts. Hydration equals healthy, bouncy, shiny curls.

Leave the conditioner in for a few minutes (BE PATIENT!) and rinse out. If you have especially dry hair, leave a very small amount of conditioner in to moisturize your locks all day long.

STEP 2:  Comb through hair to remove tangles.

Be sure to use a wide-tooth comb.  This is best done immediately after you shower when hair is still wet. Don’t use a brush – it can break the ends of hair and cause split ends.

STEP 3:  Apply a gel, mousse, or other hydrating product.

You may be tempted to skip this step .  Don’t.  This will make a world of difference in how your hair looks & feels all day long.  Apply the appropriate amount for your hair – it will depend on hair length and thickness, use experience as a guide.

Regardless of what product you’re using – either a gel, a mousse, or anything else – your hair should still be very wet – to the point of dripping.  This helps distribute the product evenly through the hair and aids in curl formation.

STEP 4:  Scrunch with your bare hands.

By scrunching, you’ll see where the curls want to form naturally. Work with your curls not against them! Pay attention to how your hair is naturally, and go with it.  You can enhance your natural curl formation by wrapping individual clumps of strands (approximately ½ to 1 inch in thickness) around your fingers.

This is typically done around the face to “frame” your look. Twisting your curls gives them that perfect spiral look.

STEP 5:  Re-scrunch your hair with a towel.

Take some of the excess moisture out, and let air dry or diffuse your hair with a dryer and diffuser on low setting.  Once your hair is dry shake it out to fluff and loosen and you will have beautiful soft goddess-like curls!
