Battle of the Fragrances: Kai & Leila Lou

I don’t know about you, but I have been hearing an awful lot about Kai and Leila Lou. For years, I have seen these brands in the press, read numerous articles in glossy magazines penned by beauty editors raving over them and have heard celebrities using the word “obsessed” to describe their devotion to these two wildly popular brands. Look them up on Beauty Collection’s website and you will see that both Kai and Leila Lou’s perfume oils have five star ratings and dozens of comments left by happy customers singing their praises.

I am going to dissect these two brands for you. Let me put them head to head, through numerous tests and judge them on multiple factors. I will describe the fragrances in detail, chronicle every pro and con about the formulas, and track performance of each product. Afterwards, you can take my data and use it to help you decide if one of these (or both!) fragrances is right for you. This all sounds super scientific doesn’t it?!

So for each brand I reviewed the perfume oil and a bath and body product. For Kai that was the Bathing Bubbles and for Leila Lou it was the Body Lotion. Let’s do this!

Kai

Kai creator Gaye Straza struggled for years to find a perfume that agreed with her, After a lot of frustration, Straza decided to make her own fragrance. Kai Perfume was inspired by her frequent vacations to the tropics in her youth, and the white exotic flowers she discovered and fell in love with during these trips. Kai’s delicate scent is intensely floral yet simple and elegant.

Kai Perfume Oil

I was super excited to get my hands on this perfume. For years I have been curious about it because of how popular it is. When you smell it in the bottle it smells so floral. Definitely not in a Grandma way though. This is a modern floral that starts with Gardenia but ends with a tropical smell. I can’t place it though. It just reminds me of the beach. The air and the sand, plants and sea. It’s all there. The tiny glass bottle is a has a roller ball applicator making it a cinch to apply and highly portable for touch ups. After application, it dried down into a creamy floral, and some Tuberose leaked out. The fragrance lasted throughout the day and when I went to bed at night, I could still smell it on my wrists.

The thing that I find most interesting about this fragrance is that even though it is a floral it is never overpowering. I have never met a floral perfume that I liked. I always felt like it entered the room before me and left way after I did. Plus I always felt like it was in my mouth or my husband was coughing and gagging, swiftly evacuating the bedroom after I sprayed myself. But not with Kai. Delicate is a great word for it. Delicate, floral and creamy

Kai Bathing Bubbles

Kai’s nourishing bubble bath is packed with moisturizing Vitamin E rich Argan Oil and naturally cleansing coconut and sugar derivatives which will leave your skin soft, supple and glowing. Your bath and skin will be fragranced with the same floral scent as Kai’s perfume oil. Personally, I loved the Bathing Bubbles. I actually used it as both a bubble bath and a shower gel. The formula did leave my skin feeling extremely smooth and hydrated and the scent was gorgeous. Not too strong but just enough so that the scent lingered on my skin throughout the day. The bottle is fairly large  (16oz) and will last for some time.

Leila Lou

This irresistible fragrance was created by Rosie Jane Cosmetics. The light perfume oil is made with 100% essential oils. Leila Lou was meant to capture the alluring scent of freshness and innocence. With notes of Pear Blossom, fresh cut grass and Tangerine, the scent is unique, modern and clean.

I am new to this brand but have heard loads of positive things about tit since I started blogging for Beauty Collection. According to Leila Lou’s website, there are only three stores that carry the line in my state and I don’t frequent any of them, so I am not surprised I have never seen it. The glass bottle is slightly larger than Kai’s, but it’s the same roller ball style. When you smell Leila Lou straight out of the bottle you smell a clean scent that is mixed with a fruitiness. It smells really good! Once applied, it dries down and becomes more complex. You can smell floral behind the clean fruit smell. It’s a beautiful mix of fruit, floral and a soapy clean. The only thing that really bothered me about this oil was that it didn’t last long enough. Kai definitely beat Leila Lou in terms of performance but the brilliant thing is that the bottle is totally portable making it easy to reapply when needed.

Leila Lou Body Lotion

Leila Lou’s light body lotion contains 100% essential oils and naturally hydrating ingredients. Shea Butter, Sunflower Seed Oil, Jojoba and Coconut Oil moisturize your skin while the scent of Leila Lou’s perfume oil fragrances your skin. Even though this was a very light formula, I loved the lotion. I used it all over my whole body and it kept me moisturized throughout the day. Layering the lotion with the perfume oil did help with the staying power of the fragrance.

Overall I am in love with both fragrances. They both have their own special qualities. The thing the I found unique about their coordinating bath and body products was that the fragrance translated well and the formulas were phenomenal. Too many times I have been disappointed by a perfume’s matching lotion or shower gel. Either the fragrance isn’t the same as the perfume or the formula is terrible. Drying lotions is the number one problem I find with perfumed body products. These did not disappoint though. I would highly recommend both brands and feel like they are universal scents. If floral based fragrances scare you, give Kai a try. It’s a fantastic perfume to ease into floral scents. Leila Lou was my favorite of the two. The clean scent is as perfect for day as it is for a night out.

So….have you tried either of these brands? What did you think? Do you have a favorite?

I hope all of my sweet readers have a happy and safe New Year! Thank you for your support in 2011, stay tuned to see what Beauty Collection brings you in 2012. It’s going to be beautiful!

Seven Sensual Scents for You and Your Valentine

This Valentine’s Day, don’t underestimate the seductive power of scent. Both men and women respond to tantalizing blends of floral, fruity, spicy, and even woodsy ingredients—which is why indulging in the right personal fragrance is essential to setting the intimate mood you desire.

Whether your tastes tend toward sweet bouquets or spicy infusions, Beauty Collection has everything you and your partner need to turn up the heat. Don’t know where to start? We recommend these seven sexy fragrances:

1. Plum sugar. The right balance of fruity and floral scents creates an irresistible bouquet without being overwhelming. Try Acqua Fiorentina, a new fragrance for women by the House of Creed, which combines sweet greengage plums and bergamot oranges with notes of rose, carnation, lemon, cedar, and sandalwood.

2. Buttery goodness. Tempt your lover and soothe your skin at the same time with Booty Parlor’s Flirty Little Secret body butter. Featuring the fresh, light scents of blackberry, honey, and vanilla, this creamy moisturizer is laden with pheromones to drive your Valentine wild.

[Hot tip! Feeling decadent? Treat yourself to 100% Pure’s Chocolate Mocha Body Cream for a rich, delicious fragrance that is sure to draw him closer. For more sweet ideas, check out “Sweets for Your Sweet”]

3. Spicy heat. Nothing says masculine like spicy notes of pepper, ginger, cardamom, or cinnamon. Help your man start his day right with Molton Brown’s Re-Charge Black Pepper Body Wash. Steeped in black pepper oil, this gel formula will not only wake up his senses, but boost his circulation, too.

4. Rich aroma. What is more attractive than the sweet smell of success? To bring out your sexy professional side, try Bond No. 9 Wall Street, which combines citrus, marine, and herbal notes for a cool, zesty scent.

5. Rosy cheek. Go bold with a new twist on the classic, sexy scent of roses. The Juliette Has a Gun collection features sassy names like Citizen Queen and Lady Vengeance, which marries the scent of Bulgarian rose with spicy patchouli and soothing vanilla for an edgy, attractive fragrance.

6. Musk haves. Rich musk notes can bring out the animal in the one you love. For a feminine twist, try CoSTUME NATIONAL 21, which combines musky undertones with the light scents of pure milk and orange blossom for a warm, sensual blend.

7. Smooth finish. Want to dance cheek-to-cheek with your man? Introduce him to The Art of Shaving, a favorite of celebs like Matthew McConaughey and Will Smith. Available in the soothing scents of lavender, lemon, and sandalwood, The 4 Elements of the Perfect Shave kit has everything he needs for a kissably smooth shave—which means you can get as close as you dare.

Sweets for Your Sweet

Chocolate. The word alone is enough to make your mouth water. Rich, decadent chocolate indulges your cravings, lifts your mood, and can even make you feel a little naughty. It’s no wonder, then, that this beloved aphrodisiac has become an essential element of St. Valentine’s Day tradition.

But that doesn’t mean you have to settle for a boring box of candy to satisfy your sweet tooth. Beauty Collection offers plenty of creative ways to indulge your chocolate fantasy without the calories!

1. Take a dip. There is nothing more luxurious than soaking in a rich, chocolaty infusion. Start with 100% Pure Shower Gel in either Chocolate Mocha or White Chocolate, then nourish your skin with the coordinating Body Cream. Don’t forget the chocolate-based Body Scrub to leave your skin looking radiant and healthy—all while tantalizing your senses.

2. Lick your lips. For tasteful lip shades that taste good, too, Jane Iredale offers the Chocoholicks collection of hydrating lip glosses. Made from natural ingredients, this whimsical quartet is packaged like a box of chocolates and offers four irresistible flavors: Truffle, Chocolate Orange, Strawberry Cream, and Caramel.

[Hot tip! Before you apply that yummy lip gloss, make your lips buttery smooth with cocoa Lip Scrub from Sara Happ. (Fans of the brand include Reece Witherspoon and Ashlee Simpson.) Exfoliating your lips not only promotes healthy skin, but it also helps you hold that decadent lip color longer.]

3. Drizzle it on. Satisfy your creative spirit—and your lust for chocolate—with saucy body art. Let your imagination run wild with Booty Parlor’s edible Melt Chocolate Body Fondue, or brush on flavorful fantasies with KamaSutra’s Lover’s Body Paint in milk chocolate and dark raspberry chocolate.

4. Lather up. Enrich your hair with Klunie’s Chocolate Shampoo from Circle of Friends, a moisturizing shampoo that cleans, conditions, and detangles hair—all while permeating it with the delightful aromas of cocoa, lavender, and chamomile.

5. Drink it in. Can’t get enough of that warm, chocolaty aroma? Spritz on Comptoir Sud Pacifique Vanille Coco Eau de Toilette, a gentle, breezy fragrance that marries Tahitian vanilla, coco milk, and heliotrope.

6. Heat it up. Enhance the mood of any room with the Island Romance scented candle from Isola Luce. Keep your love light burning bright with this delicious infusion of white and dark chocolates, sweet berries, vanilla, red roses, and a splash of champagne.

Top Five (Appropriate) Beauty Tips For A Working Gal

After reading this article in Allure asking readers how much makeup is too much for work and agreeing to sponsor a professional image seminar for young graduates at Pepperdine, I started to raise my own questions. Can the corporate and beauty worlds peacefully coexist or will one always be fighting against the other?

In my world both beauty and work can peacefully coexist. But there are certain boundaries that should never be crossed (i.e. donning the smokey eye at work and red lipstick at the same time).

After careful consideration I’ve outlined five beauty tips to carry with you everyday on your way to work.

1. Always look in the mirror before leaving home

You’ve seen those women. The ones who have royal blue eye shadow, cotton candy pink cheeks, and over-the-top red lips. And you wonder, “How could they leave the house looking like that?” This is why it’s crucial to give yourself a once-over before parading out the door each morning. While you’re giving yourself a glance make sure to ask yourself, “If the CEO were to walk into my office today, would I look presentable?”

2. Pick one area and stick to it

Just like we mentioned in tip number one sometimes you can get carried away with too many distracting looks at once. Bright lips? That’s okay. Blue eyeshadow? Forgiveable. Very pink cheeks? We’ll let it slide. But not all at once ladies! The key is everything in moderation!

3. The less the perfume, the better

Nowadays people are allergic to just about everything. That includes your perfume too! Instead of spraying on a strong scent and enduring passive-aggressive glares and sneezes all day, opt for a solid perfume. Rub a small amount on your wrists and neck and it’ll stick all day without being too obtrusive to your neighbors. Try Fracas Parfum Solid to start.

4. Look Yourself

There’s a time and a place for fuchsia nails and glitter eye shadow. Work is not one of those places to try out new beauty trends. While you may be tempted to dabble in the latest and greatest of beauty trends, remember to keep it simple and look yourself at work. Keep your ‘after-five’ look to weeknight cocktails and Saturday evenings out on town.

5. Don’t Go Bare

Wearing too much makeup is just as unprofessional as wearing absolutely none. It doesn’t send a good message to coworkers and superiors if you roll out of bed sans makeup one day and are all gussied up the next morning. Be consistent, look your best and put your best face forward!

Happiness

“Happiness cannot be traveled to, owned, earned, worn or consumed. Happiness is the spiritual experience of living every minute with love, grace and gratitude.” Cicero

“At times our own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from another person. Each
of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us.”
Albert Schweitzer
