A Working Mom’s Beauty Regimen

Gloria Araniva has worked for Beauty Collection for almost ten years.  She is a single mom with two beautiful daughters:  Savannah, age seven; and Julianna, age two . When I first started working at Beauty Collection a few years ago, Gloria was pregnant with Julianna. I’ll never forget how often clients commented on how beautiful she looked.

Although she has help from her family to care for her children, almost all of Gloria’s non-working waking hours are spent with them. How can a working mom take care of herself when her primary focus is always on her children?

As a skincare and Jane Iredale specialist, Gloria has learned beauty secrets that keep her always looking great. I sat down with her in April and asked her how she does it.

Q: Working moms have a tough time carving out time to take care of their skin. How do you do it?
A: Right before I go to bed, I make sure I go through my cleansing ritual.  That way, my skin always looks radiant in the morning. I always shower at night when the girls are in bed so that I have that time to myself. Even if I fall asleep on the couch, I get up and shower. After my shower, I use my serum and moisturizer depending on what my skin needs at that time.

Q: What is your skin type and did it change after your first or second pregnancy?
A: I have dry/dehydrated skin and am prone to freckles caused by the sun. My skin looked very radiant while I was pregnant but my freckles were a lot more noticeable probably from all the hormonal changes. The vinoperfect serum by Caudalie was great during and after my pregnancy because it helped minimize the dark spots. Otherwise my skin did not really change.

Q: How much time do you devote to your morning regimen? What steps do you do?
A: I only spend about 10 minutes total. In the morning, I cleanse again, I like to use a toner and then I always use my serum and moisturizer. I get dressed while the moisturizer soaks in and then I put on my makeup.

Q: How important is makeup to looking your best?
A: It’s very important. Makeup can help even out your skin and believe or not it helps protect your skin from the sun. It also seems to wake me up, I feel like I am ready to go!

Q:  You are the Jane Iredale specialist.  Why do you like that particular makeup so much?
A: I like it because it is a mineral makeup. It is not toxic to my skin and it always looks so natural.

Q: What products do you use?
A: If I want a flawless look, I use the liquid foundation with the pressed powder over it. I don’t always have time for that, so I use the tinted moisturizer or just the pressed powder. Then I add a little blush to my cheeks and eyelids. I finish it off with some mascara and I am done. All in all, it takes less than five minutes.

Q: What other Beauty Collection products do you use that you can’t live without?
A: I always carry the Natura Bisse Diamond Mist with me to use throughout the day when my skin feels dull. It gives me an instant pick up. I love the Borba drink because it hydrates and I get the vitamins at the same time. I noticed that when I don’t drink it, I don’t have the same energy. I also take the Murad Firm and Tone supplements because it has all the vitamins I need to keep me going. I love to spray on my favorite perfume, Juliette Has a Gun. It truly makes me feel sexy! Last but not least, I can’t live without my Moroccan Oil. Even when I don’t have time to style my hair, looks healthy and shiny. it always

Q: What advice do you have for working women?
A: Figure out a way to devote at least ten minutes a day to take care of your skin. It will definitely make a difference in the way you look which will help boost your confidence all day! If you can’t find ten minutes in the day, at least use a tinted moisturizer. It will keep you hydrated, even out your skin and give you some sun protection which will prevent premature aging.

Celebrate Moms

We asked 10 five-year old kids to tell us about their mommies. We hope their response reminds you of simpler times when moms were more than a Hallmark Holiday.

Neely: If mom’s not happy, nobody’s happy.

Meghan: When your mother is mad and asks you, “Do I look stupid?” it’s best not to answer her.

Sarah: Moms actually do have eyes in the back of their head. Mine sees everything.

Joanna: Every time I complain to my mom that I’m bored, she tells me to go clean my room.

Joe: If mom says “no,” she means it. If dad says “no,” it means maybe.

Jamie: No matter what I do, my mom can always tell when I’m lying.

Morgan: When your mom is mad at your dad, don’t let her brush your hair.

Tiffany: You should not pick your nose because your mom will SCREAM!!!

Christie: If your mom picks your clothes and you dislike them, tell her they don’t fit.

Amber: If your mom’s asleep, trust me – don’t wake her up.

Unconditional Love and Support

Part 3 of 4 in our Mother’s Day series

Mothers: Love Laughter and Strength: a collection of heart-warming stories about the moms in your life

My mother turned 84 years old this year and I can honestly say that she is one of the most unconditional people I have ever had in my life. A great spirit, vivacious and gregarious belying her years. Fourteen months ago during significant rains, the roof of my condo failed causing my ceiling to collapse. My mom went to check on my condo the day before the collapse, and noting an inch of water in the kitchen, would you believe she mopped up my kitchen?

I appreciate her to no end. Being a musician, she has been invited to many an opening night and no one can ask for a better support system.

Recently, I required minor out-patient surgery, and the only day they could do it was on her birthday. My mom selflessly drove me to the hospital and waited. Well, I set up a surprise. Like a scene from a comedy movie. In the recovery room were eight cataract patients with eye patches in backless robes, hair caps and paper slippers, four doctors, two nurses and two anesthesiologists. I asked everyone to sing “Happy Birthday!” when she came in. That will be a day she’ll remember!

History in the Making

Part 2 of 4 in our Mother’s Day series

Mothers: Love Laughter and Strength: a collection of heart-warming stories about the moms in your life

My mom was ahead of her time. She was born in 1920 and always was forward thinking. She attended college in 1938 and received a social work degree with honors. I think of her when I see the movie “The Way We Were”, carrying all the protest signs.

She wanted to go to graduate school but it was during the Second World War and they were not accepting that many women. My mom would have tried out for the team depicted in “A League of Their Own” or been on the tennis team but instead she helped her father run his furniture business. At seventy-nine she went back to social work due to financial neccesity.

She continues to keep her mind active by volunteering for political and social activities and keeping abreast of current events. Going on eighty nine years old, I’m proud to be her daughter, even though she always says to me “I did nothing with my life”. Thank you for taking the time to hear about a remarkable mom.

Never Without Lipstick and a Smile

Part 1 of 4 in our Mother’s Day series

Mothers: Love Laughter and Strength

A collection of heart-warming stories about the moms in your life

My Mom, having had for the most part a happy life, was 79 and still had a great sense of humor.

In the last few years of her life, and long after the passing of my father (the love of her life), her health declined and my sister and I would routinely take her in her wheelchair to doctor after doctor in search of any new medical possibilities.Even at 79, unable to move most of her body, sunken in a wheelchair, she was never without lipstick, blush, shadow and even a bit of a flirt for a new doctor.

So one day, in yet another medical office and after an hours worth of testing and questions, the Dr. said, “Well, Mrs. Ellison, you seem to be doing all you can at the moment, of course you know the one thing you can do to increase circulation, and improve other things is to…quit smoking.”

Without missing a beat, my mother said, “Oh Doctor, I couldn’t possibly do that! I quit smoking 35 years ago, and I got PREGNANT!”

Then we had to pick the doctor up off the floor.
