#ASKBC: Should I Switch to Natural Hair Care Products?

Q: I’m not thrilled with my current shampoo and want to try something better. I love the idea of natural hair products, but do they actually work?

A: The short answer is yes!

While the popularity of natural beauty products may seem like a relatively new phenomenon, the truth is that many of today’s natural ingredients – such as argan oil – have been at the root of hair treatments since ancient times.

These traditions persist, of course, because of good results. “The reason I would start with a natural brand is that these ingredients have worked for hundreds of years,” says Alfonzo Chavez, salon manager for Beauty Collection West Hollywood.

Here are a few great ways to include more natural products in your hair-care ritual:

Clean routine. Start by choosing natural hair-maintenance products, like the NEUMA neuMoisture Shampoo and Conditioner. Made without harsh ingredients or artificial fragrances, these products contain shea butter and olive oil to help naturally cleanse and moisturize hair of all types – including color-treated hair.

Hot tip! Chavez recommends trying a new shampoo for 2 to 4 weeks to allow it to achieve full potency. It can take time to remove the residue left from your old product. “It has been coating the hair for multiple uses, so it may not come off on the first try,” Chavez says.

Luxury line. Today’s natural hair-care brands have moved away from the granola-crunching stereotypes of the past. Now, luxury brands like Leonor Greyl Paris emphasize exceptional natural formulas for exceptional results.

“They are a very high-end brand,” Chavez says. “They make shampoos with quality ingredients.”

To revitalize dry, damaged hair, the Leonor Greyl Shampooing Creme Moelle de Bambou works to repair the hair fiber with natural active ingredients like wheat germ oil, carrot, silk proteins and bamboo marrow. The rich formula also helps to restore shine, flexibility and manageability.

Natural style. Made with sustainable ingredients harvested in the traditional way from the Amazon rain forest, the RAHUA Elixir is a high-quality oil treatment that helps repair and restore damaged, dry hair. The oil also smoothes strands, banishes frizz and boosts shine.

“For oils, natural brands are far superior,” Chavez says. “They have smaller molecules that penetrate deeper into the hair.”

Hot tip! When applying a hair treatment oil, make sure to focus on the mid-lengths and ends of your hair. “When applied too close to the scalp, it can make the scalp oily,” Chavez notes.

Sustainable results. Many natural hair care brands, like Aveda, are committed to being Earth-friendly as well. Chavez notes that Aveda uses sustainably produced raw ingredients that come directly to the company’s wind-powered factory in Minnesota.

“They were an early adopter of natural products,” he says.

If you are new to Aveda, consider trying the new Pramasana Purifying Scalp Cleanser. Made with plant-derived cleansing agents, this gentle formula cleanses and purifies the scalp to balance sebum levels.

“It addresses a broad range of skin concerns,” Chavez says.

Hot tip! No hair-care routine is complete without heat protection. “Your shampoo and conditioner are your foundation,” Chavez says. “The heat protectant is your four walls. Try the Aveda Damage Remedy Daily Hair Repair, made with quinoa protein to strengthen and protect hair during heat styling.
