Sleek Hair

#ASKBC: How Can I Make My Hair Sleek And Shiny?

Q: I love the sleek look, but I have no idea how to pull it off. How do you stop the frizz?

A: This season, sleek is still chic. Whether you wear your hair loose or in a long, lustrous ponytail, straight and shiny tresses provide a versatile spring staple.

Of course, frizz and flyaways can easily derail these deceptively simple styles.

“All of these looks are focused on the healthiest hair possible,” says Brynn Henderson, hair department manager at Beauty Collection Malibu. “Especially with the sleek looks, you need to maintain the health of the hair to keep it looking very lustrous.”

No matter how you wear your sleek hair, start with these healthy habits:

Smooth moves. When straightening your locks, Henderson’s favorite flat iron is the Bio Ionic OnePass Straightening Iron. “The silicone strips tone down flyaways and frizz,” she says. To lock in hydration and prevent damage, always remember to start with a heat-protection spray like Alterna Caviar Perfect Iron Spray.

The end game. Tidy, healthy ends are key to the entire look, which is why regular trims are so important. Between appointments, Henderson recommends using Moroccanoil hair treatment on your ends for added protection and shine.

Now that your hair is in tiptop condition, here are three sexy, sleek styles to try this spring:

Sleek sides. Celebs like Kendall Jenner have brought back Cher’s signature middle part with sleek sides. For this look, you want to minimize volume, warns Henderson. Skip the volume-boosting round brush when drying your hair, and opt for a flat paddle brush like the Marilyn Flatter Me instead.

Next, you’ll need to smooth down that part line. “If you’re not used to parting your hair in the middle, you’ll have frizzies and flyaways,” Henderson notes. Keep your part line smooth and even with the Bumble and bumble Semisumo high-shine, low-hold pomade.

Hot tip! The strict middle part isn’t for everyone. For rounder face shapes, Henderson suggests a deep side part instead.

High-gloss pony. This simply elegant updo is a red-carpet favorite. “You need a little bit of volume to pull off this look,” Henderson notes. “You don’t want to be too flat on top.”

Remember to pull up the hair at your crown for a little extra volume. For a manageable hold with a boost of shine, Henderson recommends using the Moroccanoil Luminous Hair Spray (medium hold) or Aveda Air Control (light hold).

To secure your ponytail, try the invisibobble Original Crystal Clear. With its spiral design, this invisible hair tie does the job without damaging your hair or causing tension headaches. “They are nice because they tone down the intensity of the hold,” Henderson notes.

The wet look. This fresh-from-the-shower vibe is a popular go-to for spring and summer. This slick look holds its shape, without being crunchy or sticking too close to the scalp.

“Make sure not to go overboard with slicking,” advises Henderson. “It’s okay if a couple of pieces are out of place. You don’t want your hair to be glued to your head.”

To achieve this balance, Henderson recommends working Bumble and bumble Semisumo high-shine, low-hold pomade through the hair from the roots. Next, sculpt away with the Bumble and bumble Gel, which provides a medium hold to help keep the hair in place.

Hot tip! The wet look works for every hair length. “With longer hair, the ends will be less slick,” notes Henderson. “Concentrate on the roots and the crown of the head.”
